Glenelg is a mainland village reached over the high Mam Ratagan pass, remote for all that it faces Skye across a narrow strait. Up Glen Beag stand Dun Telve and Dun Troddan, two of the best-preserved Iron Age brochs on mainland Scotland. In summer the little turntable ferry, the MV Glenachulish, still carries cars across to Kylerhea on Skye — the old, scenic way onto the island. Gavin Maxwell wrote Ring of Bright Water from a bay just south of here.
