Dornie sits where three lochs meet on the road to Skye, and just offshore stands Eilean Donan, the much-photographed island castle rebuilt between 1919 and 1932 and opened to visitors in 1955. It’s one of Scotland’s most-visited castles, so expect crowds and a busy car park in summer. The village itself has a couple of places to eat and stay along the A87.
