One of Britain's highest waterfalls, a 113-metre drop hidden in a remote Kintail gorge, reached only by a long hill walk
The Falls of Glomach are among the highest waterfalls in Britain, dropping about 113 metres into a deep, narrow gorge in the hills of Kintail in the north-west Highlands. What sets them apart as much as the height is how hard they are to reach: there is no road anywhere near, and getting to the viewpoint means a strenuous walk of around ten miles there and back over rough, boggy hill ground, so you will likely have the place more or less to yourself once you arrive.
The viewpoint is a ledge above the gorge, unfenced and steeply exposed, so take real care near the edge, especially in wet or windy weather. This is a full day out for fit walkers with proper boots, a map and a forecast, not a casual stroll. The National Trust for Scotland looks after the falls and the surrounding ground.
The usual approaches start from the glens around Kintail, west of Glen Affric. If you are in the area, it is worth pairing with the better-known sights along the road to Skye: Eilean Donan Castle at Dornie is only a short drive away and needs no walking at all.
