The churchyard at Fortingall holds a yew thought to be one of the oldest trees in Europe — estimates run to several thousand years — now protected behind a low wall beside the church. The village itself is a cluster of thatched cottages at the mouth of Glen Lyon, one of Scotland’s longest and loveliest glens. It’s a remote spot; the nearest station, Blair Atholl, is over 22km away by road.
