A wooded gorge of tumbling falls on the Moness Burn above Aberfeldy, the birch woods that Robert Burns put into song
The birks of the name are birch woods — birks is the Scots word — and this is a steep, tree-hung gorge where the Moness Burn drops through a run of falls above the town of Aberfeldy in Perthshire. A circular walk climbs one side of the gorge and comes back down the other, crossing a bridge at the top by the main fall, so you get the whole thing in a couple of miles on made paths and steps. Robert Burns walked here in 1787 and wrote “The Birks of Aberfeldy”, which is where the woods get the name they have. The falls run best after rain, and the path can be slippery under the trees. The Rob Roy Way passes close by, and Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery is just up the road.
