A wooded Highland loch under Schiehallion's shoulder, with a famous long view and a waterfall walk up near Blair Atholl
The road along Loch Tummel has one of the best-known views in the Highlands, the Queen’s View, looking west down the water towards the cone of Schiehallion. This National Scenic Area takes in 90 square kilometres of that country, a birch- and pine-fringed loch under steep wooded slopes with hills rising behind. Farragon Hill and Meall Tairneachan give solid hill days for anyone after them.
Closer to the road, the Falls of Bruar up near Blair Atholl make an easy woodland walk to a run of tumbling cascades. Autumn is a good time to come, when the birches turn and the light drops low across the water. The higher hills are open, boggy ground where the weather can change quickly, so save those for a settled day and take the usual map and compass.
