Aberfeldy sits on the Tay in Highland Perthshire, reached by Wade’s five-arched military bridge of 1733, designed by William Adam. Robert Burns wrote “The Birks of Aberfeldy” about the wooded gorge above the town, still a lovely hour’s loop past the falls. Dewar’s Aberfeldy distillery has a visitor centre if you fancy a tour. Pitlochry, about 11km north-east, is the nearest train station.
