The 4th Duke of Gordon had Fochabers laid out from 1776 as a planned village of straight streets, and most of its High Street is listed. Bellie Kirk, finished in 1798 to a design by John Baxter, faces the High Street across the Square with a four-columned portico and a clock tower and spire. On Castle Street, the Gordon Chapel of 1834 has Morris & Co stained glass, much of it designed by Edward Burne-Jones and put in between 1874 and 1919; it’s open by arrangement. Baxters, the food firm, started here in 1868. Nearby is the restored walled garden at Gordon Castle, one of the largest in Scotland, and the Speyside Way passes through.
