Elgin is the county town of Moray, laid out along a long medieval high street with the ruins of its 13th-century cathedral, once called the Lantern of the North, at the eastern end. It’s the main hub for miles around, and the station sits on the Aberdeen–Inverness line right in the centre. Handy for the Norman church at Birnie and for Pluscarden Abbey in the hills to the south-west.
