Birnie Kirk is a rare Norman parish church built around 1140, and one of the oldest churches still in continuous use in Scotland. It’s a plain, low, thick-walled building in a quiet spot about 4km south of Elgin, and usually open to look inside. Well worth the short detour if you’re passing.
