The finest piece of Anglo-Saxon carving in Worcestershire sits inside the church at Cropthorne: a ninth-century stone cross-head, worn but intricate, its shaft long lost. The village itself is a line of black-and-white cottages on the slope above the River Avon, between Pershore and Evesham. St Michael’s is usually open, and worth stepping into for the cross alone.
