Simon de Montfort was killed just north of Evesham in 1265, in the battle that ended the barons’ revolt against Henry III; he was buried in the abbey his enemies later pulled down. What survives is the great bell tower, standing alone on the green beside two medieval churches, with the town wrapped in a tight loop of the River Avon around it. The market gardens of the Vale spread out beyond. The station is a short walk north of the centre.
