England’s northernmost town, Berwick-upon-Tweed changed hands between England and Scotland more than a dozen times before settling on the English side. It’s wrapped in remarkably complete Elizabethan ramparts you can walk right around, and three very different bridges span the Tweed — the 17th-century sandstone Old Bridge, Robert Stephenson’s soaring Royal Border railway viaduct, and the 1920s road bridge. L.S. Lowry loved the place and painted it for years. The station is a short walk from the walls.
