Ladykirk — properly the Kirk of Steill — is a grand late-medieval church standing just above the River Tweed, founded around 1500 by James IV in thanks for a safe crossing of the river. Unusually complete for a Scottish church of its age, it gave the surrounding village its name and sits right on the border opposite Norham Castle. Berwick-upon-Tweed is the nearest sizeable town, a few miles downriver to the east.
