A surprisingly grand Norman church for such a quiet spot, St Cuthbert’s stands by the Tweed in Norham, close to the Scottish border and the castle the Prince Bishops of Durham raised to hold it. The long arcaded chancel and south side are the best of the 12th-century work. Berwick-upon-Tweed station is about 11km north-east.
