Etal is a pretty estate village of thatched, whitewashed cottages on the River Till, with the ruins of a 14th-century castle (now English Heritage) at one end. The Black Bull is Northumberland’s only thatched pub. From the far end of the village the Heatherslaw Light Railway, a narrow-gauge steam line, runs up the valley to neighbouring Ford. Berwick has the nearest mainline station, about 16km north.
