England’s most northerly steam railway runs fifteen-inch-gauge trains along the River Till between Heatherslaw and the village of Etal, a gentle trundle of around 25 minutes each way. It shares its site with the working Heatherslaw Corn Mill, and Ford is just up the road. Trains run seasonally, mostly spring to autumn, so check timetables before setting out. Good fun with children in tow.
