Norham is a peaceful village of stone cottages around a wide green on the south bank of the Tweed, close to the Scottish border. Above the river stand the substantial ruins of Norham Castle, a Prince Bishops’ stronghold that Turner painted more than once. The village was long the heart of Norhamshire, an outlying part of the Durham bishopric. Cornhill-on-Tweed lies a few miles upriver, and Berwick has the nearest station.
