The Union Chain Bridge spans the Tweed between England and Scotland at Horncliffe, and when it opened in 1820 it was the longest wrought-iron suspension bridge in the world. Recently restored, it still carries the odd car across — among the oldest bridges of its kind anywhere still in use. It’s a quiet, out-of-the-way crossing, well worth the small detour if you’ve any interest in early engineering.
