The Royal Border Bridge carries the East Coast main line across the Tweed at Berwick on 28 tall stone arches — Robert Stephenson’s viaduct, opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. Arriving by train you cross it without quite seeing it; the real view is from the town below, or the riverside walk. Berwick-upon-Tweed station sits right at its northern end, and the older Union Chain Bridge lies a few miles upriver.
