At over three miles, Standedge is the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain, driven under the Pennine watershed and opened in 1811. From the visitor centre at Marsden you can take a boat trip into the dark beneath the moors — a genuinely strange outing. The centre is free; boat trips are charged and worth booking. Marsden station is a short walk, or you can arrive on foot across Marsden Moor.
