Where Saddleworth runs up against the Peak District, Dove Stone Reservoir sits in a bowl of gritstone edges and RSPB-managed moorland. An easy, mostly flat track loops right round the water in about an hour, or you can climb to the crags and the higher reservoirs above. It’s popular with families and birdwatchers alike. Free and open; Greenfield station is under 3km down the valley, near Uppermill and its shops and cafés.
