Right on the edge of Inverness, Merkinch Local Nature Reserve fills a low spit of saltmarsh and shingle where the River Ness meets the Beauly Firth. It’s a quiet spot for wading birds and, out on the mudflats, hauled-out seals. Open access, with paths leading in from the Merkinch streets, so it makes an easy walk from town — the station is a couple of kilometres to the south-east.
