Southwold Lighthouse
Local highlightThe gleaming white lighthouse that rises among the houses in the middle of the Suffolk seaside town, an unlikely landmark set back from the beach
Most lighthouses stand alone on a headland, but Southwold’s rises straight out of the town, a brilliant-white tower among the rooftops and back gardens a little way in from the front. It has guided shipping along this stretch of the Suffolk coast since the 1890s, and it still works, run by Trinity House and automated now rather than kept by a resident keeper. On open days you can climb the steps inside for a view over Southwold, the pier and the sea. The Adnams Brewery is a short walk away in the same streets, and the King Charles III England Coast Path runs along the beach just below the town.
