The northern peninsula of Skye is built on a slow-motion landslip, and it shows. Cliffs, spires and grassy shelves tilt and buckle along a high basalt ridge, most dramatically at The Quiraing, where a well-trodden path threads through a jumble of pinnacles below Meall na Suiramach. The National Scenic Area covers 79 square kilometres of this, some of the strangest ground in the country.

The classic outing follows the ridge over tops like Bioda Buidhe, with the sea on both sides. It’s a fine walk in good conditions and no place to be in poor ones — the drops are real, the paths are exposed and eroded in places, and cloud rolls in fast off the Atlantic. Pick a clear, dry day, wear sturdy boots, and don’t push on along the ridge if the weather turns.
