Houses are strung round a wide, south-west-facing bay at Uig, on the Trotternish coast of Skye, and the pier on the north side is where CalMac ferries leave for Tarbert on Harris and Lochmaddy on North Uist. Steamers were running from here by 1840, and car ferries replaced them in 1963. By the pier, the Isle of Skye Brewing Company, brewing here since 1995, has a shop that’s handy while you wait for a boat. Up a narrow road just outside the village, the Fairy Glen is a strange miniature landscape of grassy cone-shaped hillocks and little lochs left by ancient landslips; please keep to the paths and don’t add to the stone spirals, which cause erosion.
