This is the far west, where a run of peninsulas breaks up into sea lochs, islands and pale sandy beaches. The scenic area covers 393 square kilometres and takes in Ardnamurchan, whose tip is the most westerly point of the British mainland, along with the silver sands around Morar.

Castle Tioram stands on a tidal island in Loch Moidart, reachable on foot at low water and cut off as the tide comes in, so check the times before you cross. Offshore lies Eilean Shona, and inland the low hills such as Meall nan Con have views over a tangle of water and land.

Roads out here are long, single-track and slow, and shops and fuel are few, so plan ahead. The coast walks and beaches suit most people on a calm day; the hills are pathless, boggy and best left to those happy with rough ground and a map.
