Almost 5,000 German and Austrian servicemen from both world wars are buried here, their dark granite headstones set among purple heather on rolling ground chosen for its resemblance to the Lüneburg Heath back home. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge inaugurated the cemetery in 1967, gathering graves from across Britain into one site. It’s free to enter, with set daily hours, on the edge of Cannock Chase. Hednesford station is about 3.6km south-east.
