Shugborough was home to the Anson family from 1624, and in the 18th century Thomas Anson scattered its parkland on the edge of Cannock Chase with monuments brought back in spirit from the Grand Tour. Among them stand the Tower of the Winds, Hadrian’s Arch and the Shepherd’s Monument, whose marble relief mirrors a Poussin painting and carries an inscription no one has fully cracked. The house and its Grade I grounds passed to the National Trust in lieu of death duties. Rugeley Trent Valley station is about 6km south-east.
