This is the only country church attributed to Sir Christopher Wren, built in 1676 for Walter Chetwynd, a friend and fellow member of the Royal Society; a drawing labelled “Mr Chetwynd’s Tower” survives among Wren’s papers. It sits among the parkland of the Ingestre estate, a calm exercise in classical proportion after the Gothic churches all around. The interior keeps a fine plaster ceiling and carved woodwork, some of it credited to Grinling Gibbons. Open to visitors, roughly 6km east of Stafford.
