The parkland is the thing to come for at Dinefwr: an old deer park of open grass and veteran trees rolling above the River Tywi, grazed by fallow deer and a herd of White Park cattle, an ancient white, black-eared breed kept here for centuries. At the centre stands Newton House, a 17th-century mansion behind a later Gothic front, run by the National Trust. On a wooded ridge above the park are the ruins of Castell Dinefwr, the medieval stronghold of the princes of Deheubarth who ruled much of south-west Wales, with a long view over the valley. Capability Brown, the great landscape gardener, is said to have advised on the grounds. The market town of Llandeilo is a short way east, and Aberglasney Gardens and Carreg Cennen castle are both close by if you are making a day of it.
