St Mary’s has the oldest lead-covered timber spire in England, an Early English broach raised around 1200 on a tower first built detached from the church. Sheathed in lead over an oak frame, it climbs through stepped stages to spirelets at each corner, and has held its line where later copies twisted. The church stands on the market place at Long Sutton. Open to visitors.
