St Machar’s is the granite cathedral of Old Aberdeen, its twin western towers capped with spires added in the 15th century. The showpiece inside is the flat oak ceiling of about 1520, painted with 48 heraldic shields of the kings and bishops of Europe. It stands above Seaton Park and the Don. Open and free, with donations welcome. Aberdeen station is a few kilometres south in the centre.
