Crichton Collegiate Church was founded in 1449 by William Crichton, Lord Chancellor of Scotland, and dedicated to St Mary and St Kentigern. It stands above the River Tyne on the lane out to Crichton Castle — a plain, sturdy medieval building that the Church of Scotland closed in 1992 and a local trust restored. It now hosts occasional services, weddings and concerts rather than regular Sunday worship, and opens to visitors at advertised times, free. Gorebridge station is about 3.5km west.
