Between Edinburgh and the Moorfoot Hills, Midlothian folds together farmland, former coalfield and the wooded valleys of the North and South Esk. The Pentland Hills form its western skyline, walking country on the capital's doorstep. The carved interior of Rosslyn Chapel draws visitors above the gorge of Roslin Glen Country Park, while Crichton Castle keeps watch to the east. Monastic Midlothian survives at Newbattle Abbey, and there is easy walking in the parkland of Vogrie and along the Esk at Penicuik.
