Scotland’s national mining museum occupies the Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange, one of the most complete Victorian pits left anywhere in Britain. You can see the giant winding engine and the headstocks that once hauled coal and men up the shaft, and go through galleries on the coalfield and the communities it built. There’s an admission charge. It’s remarkably handy for the train — Newtongrange station is barely 600m away on the Borders line.
