Vast pinewood-backed sands and shimmering flats.
An enormous sweep of pale sand backed by pinewoods and saltmarsh, Holkham Beach forms part of a national nature reserve on the north Norfolk coast. At low tide the sand runs out for what feels like half a mile, and it turns up regularly on lists of Britain’s best beaches. Access is free, on foot from Lady Anne’s Drive off the coast road, a couple of miles west of Wells-next-the-Sea.
