Crab, lobster and whelk boats still work out of Wells, and on summer afternoons families dangle crab lines off the harbour wall. The old Granary on the quay, built in the early 1900s with an overhanging gantry, is now flats. Inland, the Buttlands is a big green ringed by lime trees and Georgian houses, and Staithe Street has most of the shops. Wells beach is about a mile north along the harbour bank, with beach huts in front of the pinewoods of the Holkham nature reserve, and Holkham Beach is further west. The Wells & Walsingham Light Railway, the longest 10¼-inch-gauge line in the world, runs inland to Little Walsingham.
