Pilgrims have come to Walsingham since the eleventh century, when the lady of the manor was said to have had a vision of the Virgin Mary, and the village became known as England’s Nazareth. The Augustinian priory that grew up around the shrine is now a ruin, its great east-window arch still standing in the abbey gardens. Two shrines, Anglican and Catholic, draw pilgrims through the village again today.
