Standing remainssubstantial fabric survives to stand in front of
The west front carries the earliest surviving bar tracery in England, cut in the decade before 1244 — a few years ahead of Westminster Abbey, which usually gets the credit. The great window itself was bricked up in the 18th century. Below it, the priory nave has been the parish church of St Mary and the Holy Cross since the Dissolution and is open daily; the rest stands roofless alongside in English Heritage’s care. The north Norfolk coast is three miles on.
