Cley was a busy wool port until the marshes silted up and left it a little inland. Its narrow street bends past Flemish-gabled merchant houses to the tall brick windmill, one of the most painted buildings in Norfolk. The marshes beyond are a noted birdwatching reserve. Blakeney is the next village west along the coast road.
