Fire destroyed most of Holt on a May day in 1708, sweeping through its timber buildings in a few hours. The town was rebuilt in brick and flint over the following century, which is why the market place and high street read as Georgian today. Holt is now full of independent shops, and its station is the inland terminus of the Poppy Line steam railway.
