The Howk is a short limestone gorge on the edge of Caldbeck, where the beck cuts through the rock in a run of small falls and pools. The path threads past the ruins of an old bobbin mill that once turned one of the largest water wheels in the country. It’s a pretty walk of a few minutes from the village on a good path, though the steps down into the ravine can be slick after rain. Wigton station is about 11km to the north-west.
