On the northern edge of the fells, Caldbeck is where the huntsman John Peel — the ‘D’ye ken John Peel’ of the old song — lies buried, in the churchyard of St Kentigern’s. A short walk from the village leads into the wooded limestone gorge known as the Howk, and the old Priest’s Mill beside the beck now holds a café. The Oddfellows Arms sits on the green.
