The huntsman John Peel lies buried in Caldbeck churchyard, and the Oddfellows Arms is the village’s pub, a welcome stop on the Cumbria Way through the northern fells. It’s within a stroll of the Howk, a wooded limestone gorge below the village, and the restored watermill at Priest’s Mill. A friendly local for a pint and a plate on a long walk.
