The railway contractor Samuel Morton Peto bought Somerleyton in 1844 and remade it, rebuilding the hall in lavish style and laying out a model village of thatched estate cottages round a green. Somerleyton Hall and its gardens open to visitors in season. Unusually the station is on the doorstep — Somerleyton, about 1km from the green, on the Lowestoft line.
