Beccles once swam in the River Waveney itself, at a fenced-off bathing place, and in 1959 the town replaced it with this pool on the south bank at Puddingmoor. The main pool is 30 metres long and 16 wide, and heating was added in 1975. When the council withdrew its support in 2009, local people set up a company to take the lido on and reopened it in August 2010, and the lido has been run as a community charity ever since. The water is now kept at about 28°C and the pool opens all year, with a sauna, a café, toddler and splash pools, a springboard and a slide. Swims are booked online, with walk-ins only if there’s space. Beccles station is less than 1km east.
