Rhuddlan stands on the tidal Clwyd below its castle, one of the ring Edward I threw up after the conquest of Wales, built between 1277 and 1282. The Statute of Rhuddlan of 1284, which set out how the conquered country would be governed, was issued here. Rhyl and the coast are just downstream; the station at Rhyl is about 3km to the north-west.
