When William Edwards finished his single arch across the Taff at Pontypridd in 1756 — his fourth attempt, after three earlier bridges collapsed — it was the longest single-span stone bridge in the world. The steep humpback still stands beside its Victorian replacement. The town grew where the Rhondda meets the Taff, and its station is a couple of minutes from the centre.
