Caerphilly grew up around its castle, the largest in Wales and second largest in Britain after Windsor. Gilbert de Clare began it in 1268, ringing it with water defences and a keepless concentric plan; one of its towers now leans further than Pisa’s. The town also gave its name to Caerphilly cheese. The station sits just south of the castle walls.
